By now, you will have probably heard a lot about teeth whitening. It's the latest rage and everybody knows somebody who has done it. You can't watch television for one minute without seeing a celebrity, actor or news anchor who has had it done. White teeth give people a fantastic smile and it makes them look good because they get so much confidence from it. The great thing is that teeth whitening is a very affordable procedure nowadays. It used to be a lot more expensive. And the results used to be less impressive than they are today. Also, years ago people suffered more side effects from teeth whitening. So how safe is this treatment, really?

Risks Involved With Teeth Whitening

The truth of the matter is that teeth whitening isn't completely without risk. No cosmetic enhancement ever is. And just because this procedure doesn't involve a scalpel and surgery, doesn't make it completely safe. In teeth whitening sessions, hydrogen peroxide is used to bleach your teeth. The hydrogen peroxide breaks down the stains in your enamel, after which your teeth's natural whiteness is once again visible to the naked eye. Because hydrogen peroxide is such an aggressive chemical, this is where pretty much all the problems from whitening teeth will come from.

Whether you buy an over the counter whitening kit for use at home or whether you are going to have your teeth whitened by the dentist, you will have to have a hydrogen peroxide based gel applied to your teeth. This is the only way you are ever going to get any significant results. Don't even think about buying the whitening toothpastes or mouthwashes. Those products don't have any hydrogen peroxide and they'll never yield any serious results. They cost you only a few bucks per tube or bottle and you get what you pay for, which is almost nothing. In order to achieve significant whitening, your teeth will have to become whiter by at least 10 shades. And hydrogen peroxide is the only way to do that.

As I said earlier, hydrogen peroxide also brings risk along with it. If you apply it to your teeth for too long, it's not only going to break down your stains, it will also destroy your teeth enamel. This is going to cause pain for you for the rest of your life, because the enamel won't be able to recover. If you are going to have your teeth whitened by the dentist, then you don't really have to worry about him screwing it up for you. He's a professional and he probably whitens teeth routinely. If you are going to whiten your teeth at home with a whitening kit, then please follow all instructions to the letter. If the treatment ever becomes to painful, take a break. If the pain persists, stop the treatment completely.
